Hoy hablaremos sobre un artículo de la revista dinero.com el cual aborda un estudio sobre las estrategias claves cuando se está buscando empleo
Les cuento que En 1953 la Universidad de Yale realizó una encuesta en las que se incluían, entre otras, las siguientes preguntas: ¿has definido tus metas?; ¿las has escrito?; ¿tienes un plan claro para lograrlas? Los resultados fueron bien indicativos: un 84% de los estudiantes no tenía definida ninguna meta; un 13% las tenía, pero no las había escrito y un 3% las había escrito y tenía un plan de acción.
Veinte años más tarde, en 1973, se analizó el progreso de estos alumnos y las diferencias resultaron asombrosas: el grupo del 13% que tenía objetivos definidos, aunque no escritos, tenía el doble de ingresos (promedio) que el grupo del 84% que aseguraba no tener metas. Pero lo más increíble fue que el grupo del 3% que había escrito sus objetivos estaba ganando, en promedio, diez veces más que el 97% restante.
Este análisis, tiene una vigencia importante de cara a esa enorme cantidad de gente que por razones diversas se plantea un cambio laboral que hacen parte del listado de deseos que escriben el 31 de diciembre, pero que días después, pasada la agitación de fin de año, se diluyen en estrategias pobres, sin foco y desalineadas con la realidad del mercado laboral.
La mayor parte de la gente (en esto la madurez gerencial curiosamente pesa poco en el cambio de estrategia) se enfrenta al mercado laboral con una “gran apertura mental” que generalmente se traduce, frente a la pregunta ¿si pudiera escoger cuál sería su empleo ideal?, con la respuesta: ¡estoy abierto! Que traduce en: no tengo la menor idea.
Esa “apertura mental”, genuina desde el punto de vista de la calibración propia de sus capacidades e intereses, es sin embargo ingenua de cara a cómo opera el mercado laboral, que en todas las jerarquías del estamento ejecutivo, cada vez se acerca al mercado con una visión muy especializada que cruza con un descriptivo del cargo idealizado de grandes estrellas dueñas de un saber particular.
Para traducir lo anterior: ¡los reclutadores pocas veces salen al mercado a conseguir generalistas! Su quehacer, similar al de los ‘scouts ‘deportivos, es ir por el mundo detrás de estrellas con destrezas particulares capaces de solucionar problemas reales de corto plazo que en el ideario del reclutador (interno o externo) se solucionan con un ‘crack ‘probado en lides muy particulares.
Ahora, ese es el mercado de un 5% a 7% de la población laboral que se recluta por la vía del experto. El resto del mundo, sigue como hace siglos, reclutando a través de redes de contacto que son las grandes habilitadoras de posibilidades de empleo real. Así que de cara a esa realidad aquí van varios consejos que pueden serles útiles y que está probado: funcionan
- Piense con el deseo: ¿por qué pararse en una esquina con un cartel grande que dice “busco empleo” cuando todavía no ha intentado la vía obvia que es la aspiracional? Haga una lista corta de su trabajo ideal, póngale nombre y apellido y busque obsesivamente contactos al interior. Todos los contactos que usted necesita al interior de esas organizaciones están en Linkedin: ¡todos! Está a solo un clic de contarle su deseo de una entrevista.
- Ayúdese de mentores: la magia de Linkedin, utilizada como plataforma comercial y no de empleo, es que está a solo un paso de que alguien que usted conoce le presente a alguien que usted no conoce: funciona. Su reclutador amigo es (y poca veces nos usan para eso) una vía alterna muy útil para ayudarle a construir relaciones puntuales.
- Prepárese: esas interacciones una vez lleguen, son claves para dejar una impresión imborrable. El estudio previo de la compañía, de la función que usted busca, de su interlocutor, de los problemas a solucionar y de las evidencias que usted trae de haberlo hecho antes con solvencia, son la mejor carta de presentación para que esa persona, que generalmente usted antes no conocía, quede con la obligación de ayudarlo no sólo al interior si se puede, sino con su Newark propio en la industria que a usted tanto le interesa.
- Construya una relación: esas interacciones no son para dejar una hoja de vida. Son el inicio en la construcción de una relación sólida que idealmente dure para siempre y que como todas las relaciones hay que nutrir o mueren de inanición. Lidere esa relación, apórtele valor, ayúdele a solucionar problemas, esté presente y sea constante (no intenso).
Finalmente 5. Haga seguimiento: Los grandes gerentes tienen un mantra: “haga menos y obsesiónese”. Dedíquele con disciplina tiempo diario a su plan de carrera y persiga cada oportunidad. Conseguir empleo es, sobre todo eso, una disciplina. A usted el mercado lo está buscando, hay simplemente que ayudar a que se alineen los astros.
